History of San Luis Potosí
San Luis Capital is a city located in the central-northern region of Mexico, with origins dating back to 1592. It was founded in one of the richest mineral areas in the country, a factor that shaped its development from the very beginning. Its name refers to the French king Louis IX and to the abundance of silver, gold, and other precious metals that characterized the region.
Before the arrival of the Spanish, the territory was inhabited by the Huachichiles, a nomadic people dedicated to hunting and gathering. With the arrival of the colonizers in 1592, the systematic exploitation of mineral deposits began, and that same year the city of San Luis Minas del Potosí was founded as an important mining center.

In the context of the Mexican War of Independence, the city played a significant role as a strategic point of resistance against Spanish rule. In 1810, Miguel Hidalgo met in the city with other insurgents before advancing toward Mexico City. Later, in 1824, San Luis Capital was designated the capital of the state of San Luis Potosí.
Throughout the 19th century, the city diversified its economic development, standing out in the textile industry and agricultural activity. In 1862, San Luis Capital was occupied by French troops during the French Intervention, an episode that left a lasting mark on its history.
During the 20th century, the city transformed into an industrial reference point, particularly in the automotive sector. Early in the century, General Motors established a plant in the city, followed by other companies in the industry. In 2012, San Luis Capital strengthened its international relevance by becoming the headquarters of BMW’s Research and Development Center for Latin America.
